The best heat press for sublimation shirts is one that holds an even temperature across the whole plate, presses with even pressure, and is at least 15 × 15 inches. Brand and extra features matter much less. Sublimation is dyeing: disperse dye is moved from paper into polyester by heat, and like any dyeing it gives an uneven result when the heat or contact is uneven. This guide explains what to look for from the dye-house side, then compares four presses sold on Amazon that meet those needs.

What a heat press does in sublimation

Sublimation ink is made of disperse dyes, the same dye class that colours polyester in a dye house. Printed on paper, the dye is dry and inactive. In the press, at around 190–205°C (375–400°F), the dye turns to vapour and the polyester fibre opens up, because above its glass transition temperature the polymer chains start to move. The vapour enters the fibre, and when the shirt cools the chains close again and lock the dye inside. That is why a good sublimation print does not crack or peel: the colour is inside the fibre, not on top of it.

In our dye house, polyester is dyed with the same dyes at 130°C under pressure for 45 minutes, and the fabric is heat set at 180–190°C. A heat press does a very short, very hot version of both, in under a minute. Three things decide the result, exactly as in dyeing: temperature, time and contact. See how polyester is dyed in a factory and reactive vs disperse dye.

How a sublimation print gets into polyester
Sublimation is a short, hot disperse dyeing: the dye vaporises, enters the open polyester fibre and is locked in on cooling.

How to choose a heat press for sublimation shirts

1. Even temperature across the plate

This matters most. A plate that is 20°C cooler at the edges gives paler edges, just as a cold spot in a dyeing machine gives a lighter patch. Look for a thick aluminium plate with the heating element spread across it, and check reviews and independent tests for temperature readings across the plate, not just at the centre. A cheap infrared thermometer lets you check your own press.

2. Even pressure

Sublimation needs firm, even contact, not crushing force. Uneven pressure leaves light patches and blurred edges. Presses that come straight down (swing-away, drawer-style and most automatic presses) usually press more evenly than clamshells, which close at an angle and press harder at the back. Adjustable pressure helps when you move between thin shirts and thicker hoodies.

3. Plate size: 15 × 15 inches or larger

A 15 × 15 inch (38 × 38 cm) plate covers a full adult front print. Smaller presses and handheld irons need two or more presses for a large design, and the overlap shows as a line. For all-over or oversized prints, a 16 × 20 inch plate is better.

4. Accurate temperature and timer

A digital controller that reaches at least 205°C (400°F) and holds it, with a timer that beeps or opens the press automatically. Auto-release is worth paying for: it stops the press at the right time even if you are distracted, and it lifts straight up, which reduces ghosting.

5. Clamshell, swing-away, drawer or automatic

TypeGood forWatch out for
ClamshellSmall spaces, fast work, lower priceAngled closing; less even pressure on thick items
Swing-awayEven pressure, easy layout, thicker itemsNeeds side space; heavier
Drawer (slide-out)Safe, easy loading away from the heatHigher price
AutomaticEven pressure, auto release, less tiringHigher price; check the maximum pressure

The shirt matters as much as the press

A heat press cannot fix the wrong shirt. Disperse dye has no affinity for cotton, so:

  • 100% polyester gives the brightest, most washfast print.
  • Blends with at least about 65% polyester give softer, slightly faded-looking colour, because only the polyester part takes the dye.
  • Around 50% polyester or less gives a pale, vintage look, and loose dye sitting on the cotton fibres washes off in the first washes.
  • 100% cotton does not take sublimation dye at all; the colour washes out.
  • White or light shirts only: sublimation ink is transparent and there is no white ink, so it cannot print light colours on a dark shirt.
Polyester content and print result
Only the polyester takes disperse dye, so the colour depth of a sublimation print follows the polyester share of the shirt. Illustrative, not measured.

Common mistake: pressing a 50/50 shirt and expecting a bright print. The cotton half takes no dye, so the print looks washed out from the first day and fades further in washing. For bright colours, use 100% polyester or a polyester-rich blend.

A 15 × 15 inch automatic press released in July 2026, with a slide-out tray so you lay out the shirt away from the hot plate. Pressure is adjustable from 44 to 220 lb, and the press adjusts itself for items up to 1.8 inches thick, from thin polyester tees to hoodies. It has four custom presets and switches off after 15 minutes of idle time. It replaces the original AutoPress, which had a smaller 12 × 15 inch plate and fixed pressure.

  • Why it fits sublimation: straight-down, adjustable pressure and automatic release, the two things that most often go wrong on manual presses.
  • Keep in mind: it weighs about 42 lb, and as a new model it has less long-term user feedback than older presses. It was sold first as an Amazon exclusive in the US.

A manual swing-away press: the heated top swings to the side, so you lay out the shirt with the plate out of the way, and it presses straight down. In an independent test of HTVRONT’s 15 × 15 manual press, readings across the plate at a 300°F setting ranged from about 290 to 315°F, which is reasonably even for a press at this level, and the pressure was adjustable and firm.

  • Why it fits sublimation: straight-down pressure and a fully open plate for accurate layout, without the price of an automatic press.
  • Keep in mind: it needs side space to swing, and you must watch the timer and open it yourself. It draws about 1500 W, so use a circuit that is not shared with other heavy appliances.

Check any press in 10 minutes

Do these two checks on a new press before you print for customers. They tell you more than any product description.

  1. Pressure check: with the press cold, place four paper strips or banknotes under the plate, one near each corner, close the press and try to pull each one out. They should all hold equally firmly. A loose one shows a low corner.
  2. Temperature check: heat to your sublimation setting, wait 10 minutes, and read the plate with an infrared thermometer at the centre and near each corner. A spread of about 10°C (20°F) or less is good. If the edges run cooler, keep important parts of the design away from them.
  3. Test print: press a full-size solid colour block on a 100% polyester shirt. Pale edges or a pale corner confirm a cold or low-pressure area.

Typical settings for sublimation shirts

Start from the settings given by your ink and paper maker. Typical starting points for polyester shirts are around 190–200°C (375–400°F) for 45–60 seconds at medium pressure, with a sheet of protective paper inside the shirt to stop dye passing to the back, and a protective sheet on top. Pre-press the shirt for a few seconds first to remove moisture and wrinkles.

Common mistake: going hotter or longer to get deeper colour. On polyester, too much heat brings press marks, a shiny box outline and yellowing on white, and dye can start to bleed sideways and blur fine lines. If colours are weak, check the polyester content, the plate temperature and the ink first.

Worked example. A small business prints full-front designs on white 100% polyester running shirts. The edges of the design come out lighter than the centre. An infrared check shows the plate is 15°C cooler at the corners, and the paper-strip test shows one loose corner. Moving the design to the centre of the plate and adjusting the pressure fixes it for now; for regular orders, a press with a more even plate is worth the upgrade.

Summary

  • Sublimation is disperse dyeing: even temperature and even pressure decide the result.
  • Choose a press of at least 15 × 15 inches with straight-down pressure and accurate digital control; auto-release is worth having.
  • Use white or light shirts with high polyester content; cotton does not take sublimation dye.
  • Check any new press with a pressure test and an infrared temperature check before real orders.
  • Our picks: Cricut AutoPress 2 (best overall), HTVRONT Auto Heat Press 2, HTVRONT swing-away (best value) and VEVOR 15 × 15 (budget).

Questions

What temperature should a heat press be for sublimation shirts?

Typical starting points are about 190–200°C (375–400°F) for 45–60 seconds at medium pressure, but always start from the settings given by your ink and paper maker.

Can you sublimate on cotton shirts?

Not properly. Sublimation ink is disperse dye, which has no affinity for cotton, so the colour washes out. Use 100% polyester or a polyester-rich blend; blends give a softer, faded look.

Is a clamshell or swing-away heat press better for sublimation?

Swing-away, drawer and automatic presses usually give more even pressure because they press straight down. A good clamshell works well for thin shirts, but its angled closing can press unevenly on thicker items.

Can I use an iron or handheld press for sublimation?

For small designs, yes, but pressure depends on your hands, and large prints need several presses that can leave lines. A flat press of at least 15 × 15 inches gives more even results.

What causes ghosting in sublimation prints?

The paper moving while the press opens or while the shirt is still hot. Use heat-resistant tape, lift the plate straight up, and remove the paper with one smooth movement.
