Yes, modal is very good for underwear. It is soft, smooth and silky against the skin, absorbs moisture better than cotton, feels cool, stays soft after many washes and resists pilling, which is why it is one of the most popular fibres for premium briefs, boxers, bras and sleepwear. Its weaknesses are that it dries more slowly than synthetics, is weaker when wet than cotton, and needs cooler, gentler washing. Most modal underwear is blended with elastane for fit, and sometimes with cotton.
This guide explains why modal suits underwear, modal vs cotton, micro-fine modal, nylon and polyester for underwear, whether modal is healthy and safe, how modal underwear fabric is made and dyed, how it behaves in washing, and how to care for it. It draws on our dye-house records of more than 370 modal-blend batches and our modal dyeing routes.
Why modal works so well for underwear
- Softness: modal fibres are fine, round and smooth, without cotton’s natural twist, so the fabric feels silky and gentle.
- Moisture comfort: modal absorbs more moisture than cotton (regain about 11–12% against about 8%), so it takes sweat off the skin and feels cool.
- Stays soft: it does not stiffen with hard water and detergent build-up the way cotton can.
- Drape and smoothness: it lies flat under clothes without bunching.
- Low pilling: smooth fibres resist pilling, so underwear looks newer for longer.
- Colour: takes dye brightly and keeps it well.

Modal vs cotton underwear
| Point | Modal | Cotton |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Silky, smooth, cool | Soft, matt, natural |
| Absorbency | Higher | High |
| Softness over time | Stays soft | Can stiffen |
| Strength when wet | Lower | Higher |
| Hot washing | Not recommended | Tolerates higher temperatures |
| Pilling | Low | Low to moderate |
| Price | Higher | Lower |
Cotton remains an excellent, breathable underwear fibre that tolerates hotter washes. Modal is the upgrade for softness and smoothness.

Micro-fine modal
Many premium underwear brands use a micro-fine version of modal, made from even thinner fibres. The finer fibres give a lighter, smoother, more fluid fabric that feels almost weightless and drapes closely. It is also a little more delicate, so the care advice for modal applies even more strongly. Micro-fine modal is often knitted into very light single jersey for briefs, bralettes and camisoles.
Modal vs nylon and polyester underwear
Nylon and polyester underwear are smooth, strong and quick drying, and they keep their shape well. They suit sport and seamless designs. Their drawbacks are lower absorbency, a warmer feel in plain fabrics and a tendency to hold odour. Modal absorbs sweat, feels cooler for everyday wear and holds less odour, but dries more slowly and is less durable. Many people keep synthetic underwear for exercise and modal or cotton for everyday wear.
Is modal healthy and safe for underwear?
Modal is cellulose, the same material as cotton, and is not considered toxic to wear. For intimate areas, a breathable, absorbent fabric is generally recommended, and modal meets that need, although many health sources specifically recommend a cotton gusset in women’s underwear. As with any underwear, the dyes and finishes matter: choose products tested for restricted substances, wash new pairs before wearing, and use fragrance-free detergent if your skin is sensitive. The concerns about modal relate mainly to how the fibre is manufactured, which must recover its process chemicals properly.
How modal underwear fabric is made and dyed
Modal underwear fabric is usually knitted as a fine single jersey, often with elastane fed alongside the modal yarn. In the dye house, modal-elastane is heat set first to fix its width and stretch; in our records, 89% of modal-blend parts were heat set. Modal takes reactive dyes like cotton but is weaker wet and takes dye quickly, so it gets a gentle scour, an enzyme treatment for a clean surface, and the salt is added at 80°C in portions before the bath is cooled for the soda. The fabric is handled gently and softened lightly. See the 100% modal knit dyeing process.
How modal underwear behaves in washing
Modal relaxes in water more than cotton does. In our finishing records of 374 modal-blend batches, the median length shrinkage after the wash test was 6%, and light parts gained a median 14.6% in weight after washing, because the fabric closes up when wet. Only 27% of modal-blend parts finished within ±5% of the required GSM. For underwear this means a new pair may feel slightly thicker and snugger after the first wash. Washed hot and tumble dried, it can shrink more and lose shape. See shrinkage by fibre.
Common mistake: washing modal underwear on a 60°C cotton cycle with towels and drying it on high. Modal tolerates far less heat and friction than cotton; it relaxes, pills more and the elastane weakens. Wash it cool, in a mesh bag, and dry low.
How long does modal underwear last?
With gentle care, modal underwear keeps its softness and colour for a long time and resists pilling. The elastane and the waistband elastic usually wear out first, as with any underwear. Rough or hot washing shortens modal’s life more than cotton’s, because modal is weaker when wet. Rotating several pairs and washing at 30°C extends their life considerably.
Modal for bras, boxers and sleepwear
- Bras and bralettes: modal-elastane jersey makes soft, wire-free bras and bralettes that feel smooth against sensitive skin; structured bras still use synthetic cups and straps.
- Boxer briefs and boxers: modal gives a smooth, cool feel and drapes rather than bunches; a supportive waistband matters as much as the fabric.
- Briefs and knickers: light modal jersey sits flat under clothes; look for a breathable gusset.
- Camisoles and vests: modal’s drape and softness make light layering pieces.
- Sleepwear: modal’s cool, absorbent feel suits pyjamas and nightdresses, especially for people who sleep hot.
Modal underwear in hot weather and for sport
In everyday heat, modal underwear is very comfortable because it absorbs sweat and feels cool. During intense exercise, though, modal absorbs a lot of sweat and dries slowly, so it can feel damp and heavy. For running and the gym, a technical polyester or nylon knit dries faster; switch back to modal or cotton afterwards.
Choosing modal underwear
- Check the fibre content: modal with 5–8% elastane is typical; cotton-modal blends are a little sturdier.
- Look for a breathable gusset, often cotton, in women’s underwear.
- Choose flat, soft waistbands and seams for comfort.
- Prefer tested, certified products if you have sensitive skin.
Worked example. Someone switching from cotton briefs to modal notices that the modal pairs feel cooler and smoother and still feel soft after months, while the cotton pairs feel stiffer. Washed on a hot cycle with jeans, though, the modal pairs pill and lose shape faster. Moved to a 30°C delicate cycle in a mesh bag, they last as long as the cotton ones.
How to care for modal underwear
- Wash at 30°C on a gentle or delicate cycle, ideally in a mesh bag.
- Use mild, fragrance-free detergent; skip bleach.
- Line dry or tumble on low.
- Do not iron elastic; iron fabric on low to medium if needed.
Cotton-modal underwear
Some underwear blends cotton and modal, often with elastane. The blend feels softer and smoother than cotton and is a little sturdier and cheaper than pure modal. It suits people who want modal’s comfort but wash at slightly higher temperatures. In our records cotton-modal fabrics were among the hardest to finish exactly on weight, so expect a little settling in the first wash.
How long modal underwear lasts
Modal underwear can stay soft and keep its shape for a long time if it is washed cool and kept out of hot tumble drying. The fabric usually wears out first at the waistband elastic and at areas of heavy rubbing. Rotating several pairs, washing them in a wash bag and avoiding fabric softener all help them last longer.
Summary
- Modal is excellent for underwear: soft, smooth, absorbent and cool, and it stays soft.
- It is weaker wet than cotton and needs cooler, gentler washing.
- Most modal underwear is about 92–95% modal with 5–8% elastane.
- In our records modal blends shrank a median 6% and gained weight after washing.
- Wash at 30°C in a mesh bag and dry low to make modal underwear last.
