Rayon (viscose) shrinks more than cotton: a median 9% in length in our records of 164 batches. Why it shrinks, whether it shrinks in the dryer or cold water, and how to wash it without shrinking.

Yes, rayon shrinks, and it usually shrinks more than cotton. Rayon (viscose) is made from wood cellulose, and it swells strongly in water and becomes weak when wet. A hot wash or a hot dryer can shrink a rayon garment a lot, especially in length. In our finishing records of 164 viscose knit batches, the median length shrinkage after our dye-house wash test was 9%, the worst tenth shrank 14% or more, and only 23% of parts kept length shrinkage within the usual 5% limit. That makes viscose the least stable fibre we finish.
This guide explains why rayon shrinks, how much, whether it shrinks in the dryer or cold water, whether it shrinks every time you wash it, and how to wash it safely or shrink it on purpose.
Why rayon shrinks so much
Rayon is regenerated cellulose: wood pulp dissolved and spun back into fibre. Its molecules are less ordered than cotton’s, so it soaks up much more water and swells more. While wet, it is weak and easily stretched or squashed. When the fabric is agitated in the wash or tumbled in the dryer, the swollen yarns pull together and the fabric relaxes into a shorter, heavier shape. Once dry, it stays that way.
Rayon fabric is also often finished to a smooth, drapey state that has been stretched in processing, so it has a lot of relaxation shrinkage stored in it.

How much does rayon shrink?
| Measure (our viscose records) | Result |
|---|---|
| Batches | 164 |
| Median length shrinkage | 9% |
| Worst 10% of parts | 14% or more |
| Parts within 5% length shrinkage | 23% |
| Weight gain of light parts after washing | +17.5% (median) |
The weight gain shows how much the fabric pulls together: a rayon fabric that shrinks also becomes heavier and thicker per square metre. Full data is in the knit GSM and shrinkage study.
Does rayon shrink more than cotton?
Yes. In our records viscose shrank a median 9% in length against 6% for 100% cotton, and far fewer viscose parts stayed within a 5% limit (23% against 47%).
Does rayon shrink in the dryer?
Yes, and the dryer is the riskiest step. Heat plus tumbling on swollen, weak fibres gives the biggest shrinkage and can also distort seams and hems. Most rayon labels say hand wash or gentle wash and dry flat for this reason.
Does rayon shrink in cold water?
Less, but it can. Rayon swells even in cold water, so some shrinkage is possible, especially if the garment is wrung or agitated hard. A gentle cold wash, no wringing and flat drying keep it small.
Does rayon shrink every time you wash it?
Most shrinkage happens in the first wash or two. After that, rayon can shrink a little more if it is washed or dried hotter than before, but it does not keep shrinking at the same rate every time. Rayon can also stretch back out when worn or ironed while damp, which is why it seems to change size between washes.
Common mistake: wringing out a wet rayon dress and hanging it on a hanger. Wet rayon is weak; wringing distorts the fabric and hanging lets the weight stretch the length unevenly. Roll it in a towel and dry it flat.
Rayon blends
- Viscose-elastane: usually heat set in the factory; in our process records heat setting brings its length shrinkage down to about 10%, but three out of four parts still finish light and relax later.
- Polyester-viscose (PV): more stable, a median 4% in our records, because polyester does not shrink.
- Modal and lyocell are stronger relatives of rayon and shrank a median 6% and 7%; see what modal fabric is.
How to wash rayon without shrinking it
- Follow the label; many rayon garments are “hand wash” or “dry clean”.
- Wash cold, on a gentle cycle, inside out, or by hand.
- Do not wring: press the water out or roll in a towel.
- Dry flat, out of strong sun. Avoid the dryer.
- Iron on a low setting while slightly damp to ease it back to shape.
How to shrink rayon on purpose (carefully)
Wash it warm and tumble dry on low to medium heat, checking every 10 minutes. Rayon shrinks quickly and unevenly, so go slowly. If it shrinks too far, a damp garment can often be gently stretched back and dried flat.
Worked example. A rayon midi dress 110 cm long shrinks a median 9% in a warm wash and dryer, about 10 cm, and the worst cases in our records would lose 15 cm or more. The same dress washed cold and dried flat might lose only a few centimetres. With rayon, how you dry matters as much as how you wash.
Summary
- Rayon (viscose) shrinks more than cotton: a median 9% in length in our records.
- Only 23% of viscose parts stayed within 5% shrinkage.
- The dryer is the main risk; wash cold and dry flat.
- Most shrinkage happens in the first wash or two.

Questions
Does rayon shrink?
Yes. In our records of 164 viscose knit batches the median length shrinkage after washing was 9%, and the worst tenth shrank 14% or more.
Does rayon shrink more than cotton?
Yes. Viscose shrank a median 9% against 6% for 100% cotton in our records, and far fewer viscose parts stayed within a 5% limit.
Does rayon shrink in the dryer?
Yes, the dryer is the biggest risk. Heat and tumbling on swollen, weak wet fibres shrink and distort rayon most.
Does rayon shrink in cold water?
Less, but it can, because rayon swells even in cold water. Wash gently, do not wring and dry flat.
Does rayon shrink every time you wash it?
Most shrinkage happens in the first wash or two. It can shrink a little more if later washed or dried hotter.
